Halloween Party Food
A Few Halloween Party Food Ideas
One might expect Halloween party food to be seasonal in keeping with what late autumn usually brings us. Since much of what we eat in terms of fruits and vegetables have long since been harvested, that doesn't always leave us with too wide a choice, except for a few nuts, apple juice or cider purchased at a fruit stand or farmer's market, and of course the pumpkin.
That shouldn't keep any one from serving whatever they want to in the way of Halloween party food, and there is no lack of good ideas and recipes that can be found online. Very often party snacks or meals for Halloween consist of ordinary foods decorated with a holiday motif. A meatball with 8 toothpicks quickly becomes a spider, strips of licorice, or pull apart candy held in place between the halves of an Oreo cookie will also make a presentable spider. Witches hats are another theme one can work with as there are a host of conical shaped chocolates or cookies that, with a little help, can make a presentable witch's hat. Even chocolate kisses work as tiny hats.
Ghosts And Spider Webs - Need some little ghosts on the table? Macaroons, white cake frosting, or stiff whipped cream can get one started on that theme. Small candy pieces like red hots make excellent eyes. Getting back to spiders, a few spider webs here and there can add a finishing touch to the selection of Halloween party food to be served. Spider webs are easy to create on round dishes. Melted cheese can be strung out in a spider web pattern on a pizza. Whipped cream can be used to create a spider web pattern on the pumpkin pie, and frosting can serve the same purpose with a cake. A traditional spider web pattern is not difficult to make and can be fun to try.
Designer Sandwiches? - Cookie cutters are almost always available to create cookies having a Halloween theme. If a large enough cookie cutter is available, consider making theme shaped sandwiches. A pumpkin shape for a sandwich is probably easiest, and may be as far as you would want to go. A witch on a broomstick shaped sandwich would really be a challenge, but anything is possible once you set your mind to it. No matter what the shape, a fairly firm bread that is not crumbly would be best. Dough wrapped around a hot dog and cooked in the oven provides you with miniature mummies for a snack.
Don't Go Overboard - Two of the challenges facing anyone looking for Halloween party food ideas are how to avoid going overboard on the sweets, especially the sugar used for decorative purposes, and how far to go in designing really gross looking food items. Some don't mind eating finger food that actually looks like fingers, but others won't touch the stuff. When it comes to serving slimy or gross looking food, it's easy to cross over the line from clever to totally unappetizing.
Pumpkin Seeds - Sometimes the food can be plain old traditional food, with the Halloween theme food saved for desert. There are however, uses for the pumpkin other than pie. Most people like pumpkin seeds and there are all sorts of recipes available on various ways to roast them. You can roast them plain on a shallow baking pan in a little cooking oil, perhaps coating them with a little garlic powder. An even tastier treat is achieved when the roasting pumpkin seeds are covered with something hot and spicy, such as red pepper powder. If you have time, prepare 3 or 4 different varieties of roasted pumpkin seeds to serve as appetizers.
Try Pumpkin And Cheese Fondue - Pumpkin bread is another possibility and squash or pumpkin soup can be served in a hollowed out pumpkin. One of the more interesting ideas out there is a cheese fondue served in a hollowed out, baked pumpkin. The pumpkin adds its own distinctive flavor to the fondue, and whether the baked pumpkin is taken fresh from the oven, or reheated later, it also serves to keep the fondue melted. Adding a little cinnamon and nutmeg to the pumpkin before baking will really make a world of difference in the flavor the fondue will take on. As far as the fondue is concerned, you can use any recipe you want, but a good Emmenthaler cheese, a good Gruyere cheese, or better yet, a combination of the two seems to work especially well when served from a pumpkin bowl.
Halloween party food ideas aren't really all that difficult to come up with. Think witch hats, spider webs, ghosts, and pumpkins, not forgetting the seeds, and you're off to a good start.
